WBCN Rock and Roll Rumble (Semi-Finals, Night #2)
Harpers Ferry, Allston MA
What to say about The Indefinite Article? I'd expected a trite, contrived white-boy attempt at hip hop. But within ten seconds these guys start kicking my smug, jaded ass. Ricky Rhythms' warm, golden voice drawls in contrast to Father Abraham's staccato, spitfire vocals, while boogie-woogie piano slides around funky wah guitars. The rhythm section bulldozes any preconceived notion about white boys failing to, uh, bring it. Stand-outs are "Man Down" and "Lives of Bliss," and the crowd goes nuts for "Namsing," a shout-along that gets the proverbial roof raised. In-Def, as they're more fondly known, are the connective tissue between Wack Ass Egyptians and Campaign for Real Time, somebody make that bill happen. Maybe I'll book that. In any case, I plan to see these guys more. Lots more.
